Crab Lane - No Footway

Making Kings Reach Fit For Purpose

Making Kings Reach Fit For Purpose

It is impossible to access the high street and use the Zebra Crossing without going into the carriageway from the top of Crab Lane. The footway narrows to such extent that it is too narrow for a single person to walk on normally. This is a vital walking route to the town centre, and is part of National Cycle Route 51.

At the moment if you use a mobility scooter or wheelchair you need to get into the carriageway from the cycle track, on the bend near Brigham Gardens, as there is no proper dropped kerb from the footway bit.

The turning head at the top is always used as a parking space so vehicles that go up there block the ramp onto the bit that is footway and closed to traffic with bollards.

We have contacted Central Beds Council and await their response.

Kings Reach could be described as a 'Failed Estate' While housing stock is mostly of good quality it is severely let down by It's public Realm. The design of which could be called bizarre at best and, scary or down right dangerous in some locations. We're trying to change that by lobbying the powers in charge.

Check out these documents which highlight some of the problems:

Footway Parking Ban in Biggleswade

Making Kings Reach Fit For Purpose

Biggleswade Green Wheel - Dan Albone Crossing & Shortmead Street

Footway parking is blight on Biggleswade and the Highway Authority Central Bedfordshire Council could solve it with a Traffic Order practically overnight. We have been in contact with CBC and Richard Fuller MP. Look out for updates on this.

There is currently no suitable crossing on the Green Wheel at Hill Lane/ Shortmead Street. There is also no cycling along the river at this point and the suggested alterative is Shortmead Street, which has no provision what so ever for cycling. We'll be seeking election pledges to rectify this at next years Central Bedfordshire Council elections.

Segregated Cycle Lanes and Safe Junctions on London Road

Segregated Cycle Lanes and Safe Junctions on London Road

The A1 Retail Park offers some great shopping, however there is no infrastructure to facilitate people visiting by walking or cycling. While there is ample bike parking here and most of town is with 20 to 25 minutes walk, these modes of transport have been neglected. We'll be seeking election pledges to rectify this at next years Central Bedfordshire Council elections.
