The Kingfisher Way has been developed to make use of the Ivel Valley's railway stations, allowing the route to be tackled as a whole or in stages. This section, from Arlesey to Biggleswade, provides a perfect introduction to the countryside and wildlife of the valley and passes by Langford Meadows nature reserve, and Holme Mills, the last commercial mill operating on the river today.
The 21 mile(34km) walk following the course of the River Ivel from its source at Ivel Springs in Baldock, through the towns and villages of the Ivel Valley, to Roxton Lock, provides a perfect introduction to the Ivel Valley countryside, its wildlife and history. This section of the walk is 9 miles starting in Biggleswade and finishing at Roxton Lock. The route is defined by signposts and waymarker posts bearing customised Kingfisher Way waymarker discs. These in conjunction with the map and directions provided in the route description below will enable you to follow the route with ease.
The Biggleswade Green Wheel has been developed over the last decade as a result of groups and individuals calling for more, better quality, opportunities to walk and cycle in the local area. Having a ‘wheel’ around the town, with a number of ‘spokes’ leading from the ‘hub’ of the town enables people to access the route close to their homes and follow the whole wheel, or just part of it.
